Since when is "Outdoors" inside a building?
From the Compact Oxford English Dictionary:
outdoors
• adverb in or into the open air.
• noun any area outside buildings or shelter.
This would seem to be a pretty clear and concise definition of outdoors. However Clubs Victoria, not happy with condoning damaging the health of their staff and patrons through encouraging smoking in their venues, now want to redefine the word outdoors for their own use.
The following comes from a Clubs Victoria circular to members (which is available here) :
Consultation with stakeholders will commence immediately. ClubsVIC will work towards providing enough scope for clubs to safely accommodate both smokers and non-smokers in-doors, and that the definition of "out-doors" is not restrictive and that any phasing-in is as non-intrusive as possible.
Well there it is - straight from the horse's mouth. ClubsVic are going to make the outdoors come indoors - maybe we can all go camping at our nearest pub or club. Campsite is free as long as you play the pokies and don't mind the smoke. Maybe we will even have "out-door" gaming rooms. (Since when did indoors and outdoors get hyphens anyway?
The government need to come out immediately and put this to rest. When other smoking bans have come in outdoors has meant outdoors. Also I suggest that if smokers are looking for somewhere to smoke they should go down to Level 1, 17-21 Argyle Place South, Carlton South where I'm sure they can find a nice 'out-door' carpeted corner where they can puff away.
Also what rubbish is the statement that clubs are "one of the last bastions of "connectiveness" in our society." Many clubs have long forgotten their communities and have just lent out their organisations as fronts for poker machine licences.
Why has the government introduced Community Benefit Statements? Because we don't know where the money is going? Ask anyone in the health, sport and recreation area and they will tell you that smoking is not healthy. Clubs should be encouraging people not to smoke, not acting as a sanctuary for the most damaging legal addictions of gambling, alcohol and tobacco.
So Clubs Victoria please get a clue! Outdoors is outside - in the fresh air - not inside, dah!
