Global Gaming is Big Business - US Casinos Try to Take Over The World
Gary Morris, Intake Worker here at Gambler's Help Southern brought this article in The Economist to my attention.
The article "Gambling Goes Global: All Bets Are On" is an interesting discussion of how gambling in big business, not only in the US but around the world. The article discusses not only how the major Las Vegas players are spreading their brand of 'entertainment' across America but also of their efforts to establish profit centres in Europe and Asia.
The discussion of internet gambling is also an interesting one, and it is becoming more and more likely that their will be legal regulated online gambling in the USA on casino style games. I personally doubt that sportsbooks will be legalised due to the extensive bans on them across America.
It is scary that gambling has become such an acceptable form of revenue raising that it is almost seen as being a neccessary element of modern society, with governments and companies eagerly waiting to benefit from the change in the community's views.
However Australia, the world's problem gambling mecca is again used as an example of what can happen if it is done the wrong way. More and more we are being painted as an experiment that has gone horribly wrong. We are the Frankenstein's monster of the gambling world.
When will are governments here in Australia get the hint that something must be done. Victoria has an opportunity, with the current relicensing process, why don't they take it.
